The Mutual Aid Sharing Plan (MASP) exists to help its member organizations more effectively advance their mission by providing a mutual aid alternative that reduces the cost of health care benefits.

OUR STORY

The MASP story began in 1969. Edgar Stoesz, representing Mennonite Central Committee at a meeting of the Council of Mennonite Mission Board Secretaries,  overheard a conversation about an insurance agent who had been visiting Mission Board offices and impressing on them their need to provide workers with health insurance. They were shocked at the prices the agent was quoting, but conceded that perhaps they were underestimating their health care liabilities. Mr. Stoesz had an epiphany: “We could pool these major medical claims and save a bundle.” And that’s exactly what happened – a sharing pool was created that has saved member organizations millions!

About

what we do

Built on the foundational value of mutual aid, the MASP provides a risk-sharing mechanism that allows member organizations to provide a self-funded health plan for their employees while spreading risk over a much larger group of people. In essence the MASP facilitates an additional layer of self-funding. Member organizations provide their own self-funded health plans but transfer claims that exceed an annual amount into a pool that is jointly funded. The amount retained by each member organization is very low in comparison to commercial self-funded plans. We collectively purchase a stop-loss policy to cover catastrophic claims. Overall this approach provides numerous advantages compared to other options.

The MASP program is a near-perfect model of risk management and efficiency. The result is the lowest cost benefit plan I’ve seen in my 40+ years of actuarial work.

Joining the MASP has been a game changer for our church. After years of bouncing between different brokers and programs we found something unique: an organization that had the members’ best interests in mind. A primary difference is the absence of a profit motive; as a non-profit, the MASP’s focus is singular—to provide the best and most cost effective health care coverage for its members.  This produces better prices, better communication and better stewardship. I am so thankful for the MASP and look forward to a long-term relationship!

Friendship Community is proud to be a long-term member of the MASP. We value the community and mutual aid it provides as we navigate the challenges in life together.  In this complex world of health care benefits, the MASP collaborative effort yields financially sound methods as we support one another and learn from each others unique expertise for greater good.
