ouR STORY

The MASP story began in 1969. Edgar Stoesz, representing Mennonite Central Committee at a meeting of the Council of Mennonite Mission Board Secretaries, overheard a conversation about an insurance agent who had been visiting Mission Board offices and impressing on them their need to provide workers with health insurance. They were shocked at the prices the agent was quoting, but conceded that perhaps they were underestimating their health care liabilities. Mr. Stoesz had an epiphany: “We could pool these major medical claims and save a bundle.” And that’s exactly what happened – a sharing pool was created that has saved member organizations millions!

Fifty years later this creative solution continues to thrive in the increasingly complex world of modern health care. This collaborative approach has freed up millions of dollars that member organizations have used to accomplish their mission—money that would have otherwise profited insurance carriers.

The MASP currently consists of 21 member organizations from the U.S. and Canada with a combined enrollment of 2,000 lives. Government regulations prompted leaders to adapt new models over time, but every change has been guided by a set of Core Values and an unwavering commitment to mutual aid in mission.
